Computer & ID Protection When Traveling or at Home / Office

Since you’re reading this article, you’re most likely already connected to the Internet. You’ve probably already thought about security on your computer or network and especially when you’re traveling. Every day seems to bring new threats and it can seem pretty daunting, but the key thing is to have a common sense approach and to take a few basic precautions.

There are lots of great tools available to help and you don’t have to break the bank to get them. Here are some areas to take a look at when seeking protection both while traveling as well as at home / office:

BACKUPS

Securing your information starts here. You’ll need some or all of the security tools listed below, but even then you can’t guarantee 100% that you won’t have a problem. Hardware failures do occur so backup your data. One easy way to keep your important files is to burn them onto CD or DVD.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

An absolute must have. Alright, you already knew that, but I can’t stress too strongly the importance of having good, up-to-date antivirus software. With new threats and Viruses arriving every day it’s important to maintain update subscriptions and download virus definition updates as soon as they become available.

There’s a lot of good antivirus software available, both free and for low cost. I’d recommend going for paid software…you just never know when you’re going to need to call a helpdesk and that’s generally the difference between the free stuff and the stuff you pay for. Norton, McAfee, AVG and others all sell antivirus software that’s affordable on a low budget.

FIREWALL

A firewall is always recommended to help protect against unauthorized access to your PC. For a small number of PCs a software firewall is usually best and is the easiest to work with if you’re not an IT expert. However, don’t discount hardware firewalls, especially if you have a network with a lot of devices on it.

Whatever you do, don’t rely on the Network Address Translation or packet filter built into your DSL or Cable router. It almost certainly won’t be enough.

If you’re buying a particular company’s Anti-virus software it’s worth considering buying their integrated AV and firewall package if they have one (if they don’t then maybe you should try someone else). It may well save you money and be easier to configure and maintain.

ANTI-SPYWARE SOFTWARE

If you spend a lot of time browsing the Web (and hey, who doesn’t?), then spyware is going to find its way onto your machine. A lot of it isn’t particularly nasty, but the really bad stuff can send important information like passwords, bank details or credit card numbers to people you really don’t want to have access to that stuff. At the very least it can slow down your PC and since you didn’t ask for it in the first place then you should get rid of it.

Some tell-tail signs that you have a Spyware infection are:

- You’re getting pop-up ads all the time

- Your default homepage or other settings in your browser suddenly change (especially if you can’t change them back)

- Your computer is slow (there could be other reasons for this, but it’s worth checking for spyware)

There’s some good free software available from Lavasoft called AdAware. Microsoft also have their own free tool for Windows users called Windows Defender. Among the paid-for Anti-Spyware software Webroot’s

Spy Sweeper regularly picks up awards from computer magazines.

PASSWORDS

More and more people are accessing secure sites for shopping, banking, etc. Provided you take sensible precautions it’s a great way to shop.

If you’ve been doing any online shopping you’ll be used to dealing with secure sites. Whatever methods these sites use to secure their servers or encrypt your traffic, if they’re accessed by passwords then you share some of the responsibility for the security on your transactions. Here are a few tips on how to keep unauthorised users from accessing your accounts:

- Be inventive with your passwords. Don’t use easy to guess stuff that a lot of people know about you or can find out. Use a mixture of uppercase and lowercase characters, numbers and special characters (again be inventive. Just using a 1 instead of the letter i is no use if it still spells out an easy to guess word).

- Use different passwords for different accounts. If you always use the same one and it’s compromised then someone will have access to everything.

- Don’t write passwords down on paper or post-it notes. That’s a hacker’s favorite way to find passwords if they have physical access to your office.

- Don’t get Web browsers to remember your passwords on shared machines or in office areas. If you log into a machine that other users have access to then never use Windows or Web browser mechanisms that remember your account details.

Having different passwords to lots of different accounts does make it more difficult to remember them and it’s important that this doesn’t lead you into bad habits. So what do you do?

You could look at getting some password management software. Naturally, Norton has a password manager, but other good options include “Web Replay” from Deskperience or “PC Password Manager XP” from CPLab.

PROXY SERVERS

Use a proxy server when necessary, a proxy server will allow you to surf the net and make it much more difficult for you to be found. This can be especially helpful when you’re on your lap top traveling or on vacation. Do you run an online business which includes a help desk? You may benefit from

Remote PC Access Software which will allow your staff to deal with things on a more sophisticated and reliable manner while you are out and about.

PROXY Pro 7 Workstation Edition utilizes a strong authentication with efficient permissions and 256-bit encryption provide that only authorized persons may have access to remote computers and ensure security and privacy.

Some of the features of this proxy service include the following:

1) Ability to reach remote computers anytime, even if those computers are unattended.

2) Computer access restriction by IP address, IP address range and/or time zone.

3) Retain details of connection-related activities in the Windows Event Log for each computer.

4) Ability to create role-based access control policies based on fine-grained permissions

5) Operates on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003. Both 32 and 64 bit systems

For more information on this proxy service be sure to check out this Remote PC Access Software

WHERE TO NOW?

You don’t have to go out and buy every piece of security software right away. Prioritize one or two to start with (I’d suggest Antivirus w/ Firewall software and PROXY Pro 7 Workstation Edition ). Also download trial versions where applicable so you can be sure you’re happy with them before you part with your hard earned cash.

Be careful on the Internet, but don’t let the bad guys ruin your day.

Check Out Paramount Studios While in Hollywood

A Great place to visit when in the Southern California area on vacation is the Paramount Studios.    Follow along with me as we review the history of this  monumental place in the land of Hollywood…

Paramount Pictures Corporation owned by media conglomerate Viacom was founded in the year 1912. The founder Adolph Zukor of Famous Players Film Company decided to make feature films that would fulfill the demands of immigrants. By the mid of next year he made five successful films. In the same year Jesse L. Lasky founded Lasky Feature Play Company and hired Cecil B. DeMille for his first movie “The Squaw Man”. Both these production companies sought help of Paramount Pictures to release their movies. Paramount Pictures was a new company at that time and was a merger of many small firms by W. W. Hokinson. The idea was appreciated and the new company, Famous Players-Lasky, got a good start. Lasky and his brother-in-law, Goldfish became in charge of the production, along with DeMille. Hiram Abrams was responsible for the distribution where as Zukor made plans for the development of the company. The company soon touched great heights. In 1916, Zukor decided to talk about the merging of the three companies with Lasky and Hodkinson. Public can take guided tour into the Paramount Studios situated in Hollywood, California.

Zukor made the first slogan of the company “Famous Players in Famous Plays”. He was the man behind successful actors like Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford, Wallace Reid and Gloria Swanson. Paramount Pictures were the first to introduce the concept of block booking; this meant that if a particular firm wanted to buy the rights of a particular actor, they were also required to buy the other productions of Paramount Productions for that year. This concept proved to be a huge success and boosted the company’s sale.

Under the leadership of Zukor, Paramount had huge success. He was responsible for building number of theaters which had nearly two thousand screens altogether. He also had big investments in radio and in 1926 he gained control over the Balaban & Katz chain. Barney Balaban became the president and Sam Katz handled the Paramount Publix theater chain. The company’s name, Famous Players-Lasky was changed to Paramount-Publix Corporation, in 1927.  Due to the success of Publix theater chain the name was changed to Paramount-Publix Corporation in 1930.

By 1932 Zukon left all his old partners behind as the company was facing bankruptcy due to the enormous expansion projects. A bank reorganization team, consisting of Otto Kahn and John Hertz took over the company but kept Zukon in the company. After dealing with bankruptcy, the company was named Paramount Pictures, Inc. and Barney Balaban became the chairman. Many actors and singers were roped in and on a yearly basis; the company was producing nearly seventy movies a year. They also tried their hand at cartoon and the two characters, Popeye the Sailor and Betty Boop became an instant hit.

The government was having problems with the block booking, so the company decided to end it in 1940, after which the company’s production went down to twenty movies a year. While the company was making an effort to attract audience during the World War II, the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department reopened the case, U.S. vs. Paramount Pictures and the Supreme Court ordered the split of the company into two. Due to the loss of theater chains, the position of Paramount Pictures was very unstable and the company was sold to Gulf and Western Industries.

Paramount collaborated with Universal Studios to form Cinema International Corporation in 1970. They began producing for television. After the realease of movies “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever”, the interest in movies were back again. Paramount Pictures began making albums when they purchased rights for Paramount Records. Cinema International Corporation became United International Pictures, in 1981, which was renamed as Paramount Communications in 1989. Paramount became a prominent name in Hollywood once again and gave tough competition to its rivals. Some survived by moving to another place like Warner Bros. and some closed down like for instance RKO.

Family Cruise Vacations

Year after year, millions of families make the decision to take a family vacation. If you and your family are interested in becoming one of those families, you have a number of different options.  Your options may include, but are not limited to, camping, visiting the beach, visiting a local amusement park, or setting sail on the water.

Vacationing upon the water is a something that many individuals would like to do.  Unfortunately, most individuals do not own a boat or know how to operate one.  The good news is that you do not have to know anything about boats to enjoy a fun family vacation aboard a cruise ship. For years now, cruise ships have been creating fun, exciting, and safe vacation environments for families.

You might be questioning if you and your family would enjoy a vacation aboard a cruise ship. The reality is that all families vary.  Each family member is likely to have a personal preference.  Despite that preferences, cruise ships are often enjoyed by everyone, not matter what their age. This is because cruise ships offer a wide range of activities. These activities are geared towards individuals of all ages.

When deciding whether or not your family should take a family vacation aboard a cruise ship, you are encouraged to consider cruise ship benefits.  The most obvious benefit, as mentioned above, is the onboard activities.  On any given cruise ship, you are likely to find an unlimited number of activities for both children and adults. These activities may include swimming, gaming, gambling, eating, watching movies, and dancing.

Another of the many benefits of taking a family cruise ship vacation is the fact that almost all cruise ships have onboard childcare.  If you are traveling with small children, these childcare centers may allow you to have private moments by yourself or with your spouse.  These childcare centers are often operated free of charge.  That means that within a few minutes, you could drop your child off and be on your way to pampering yourself.

One of the benefits of a cruise ship vacation  that many individuals do not consider is the quality time spent together. While it is true that this quality time together can be spent anywhere, it is often more memorable on a cruise ship.  Many travelers view the close corridors as a disadvantage, but in a way it may benefit your family. This benefit is most often seen with teenagers. When a child becomes a teen, spending time with their family is often eliminated from their list of priorities. A cruise ship will provide them with fun and exciting activities, but it will also allow you and your child to reconnect.

Many memories will be made on a cruise ship and are often incomparable.  The majority of children will be unable to, for one reason or another, take a cruise when they reach adulthood.  This memory is one that could serve them for a lifetime.  To cherish this memory, you are encouraged to bring along a camera or video recorder.  In addition to enjoying the cruise in the present, you and your family will also be able to enjoy it in the future.  Can you imagine sitting around your kitchen table twenty years from now reminiscing with your family?

Whatever your final decision for your family vacation, whether it be on a cruise ship or not, your vacation is sure to be a memorable one.  For a reasonable price, you can have an unforgettable vacation.  If a cruise is financially within your reach, you should go for it!
